In clinical trials: CIMZIA has been shown to reduce rheumatoid arthritis pain, stiffness, and improve fatigue within 1 to 2 weeks in some patients. Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune disease. This means the body’s natural immune system does not work as it should, often first attacking the lining of the joints, known as the synovium, and causing inflammation. If left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to long-term joint damage and further damage to other areas such as the skin, lungs, and nervous system, in later stages of the disease.

As you likely know, rheumatoid arthritis may be a painful disease. Common problems include joint stiffness, fatigue, and loss of mobility. Rheumatoid arthritis is also a chronic disease. Getting started with Orencia:

Prescription. Your rheumatologist will prescribe your dose (how much ORENCIA you’ll need) and tell you when to schedule your first appointment to receive treatment of ORENCIA. You can also ask your rheumatologist if he/she can provide you with a special Starter Kit with helpful information about ORENCIA. If your rheumatologist does not have kits available, he/she can call 1-800-ORENCIA to request them.

Dosing. ORENCIA is a 30-minute intravenous (IV) infusion given by a healthcare professional. You will receive your first dose of ORENCIA followed by a second dose around day 15 and a third dose around day 30. You will then continue therapy of one dose every 4 weeks thereafter. Please note that the actual day of dosing may vary based on patient scheduling.

Infusion. After arriving for treatment, someone will check your vital signs (temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) and you may have a routine physical exam. You will be seated in an infusion chair, which is similar to a recliner or lounge chair. The infusion lasts about half an hour, however your total “seat time” may be longer. During treatment, many people like to read a book, listen to music on a headset, or watch television. While individual experiences may vary, patients can usually maintain their normal schedule while receiving ORENCIA.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a form of arthritis. While arthritis is a disease that involves a deterioration of the joints of the body — such as the hips, knees, fingers, hands, etc. — the rheumatoid form has an autoimmune cause and can also induce chronic or periodic pain in many parts of the body, and symptoms can also include muscular fatigue, infection-like fever and swelling, hair loss, chest pain, night sweats and others.
